One Student’s Journey
Michael Kingpotiki, a farm manager from Southland, hid his inability to read and write for most of his life. He developed coping mechanisms, like memorizing information and asking others to read for him, to navigate his personal and professional life. However, the desire to read to his grandchildren motivated him to seek help in his late 50s.
He connected with Linda Davies, a retired teacher and volunteer at RYALT, through the Literacy Association of New Zealand. Over three years of online lessons, Michael gradually learned to read and write, building on his existing knowledge and overcoming the shame associated with his illiteracy. Linda’s understanding and patient approach, along with Michael’s determination, led to significant progress.
Michael’s newfound literacy skills allowed him to write and self-publish his autobiography, “A Journey Towards Literacy.” The book serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges, emphasizing the importance of taking that first step towards learning. Michael’s story also highlights the transformative power of our adult literacy programs and the dedication of our awesome volunteer tutors like Linda.
Michael Kingpotiki, was recently interviewed on RNZ about his literacy journey which recently culminated in a published autobiography. You can listen to the interview below.
