About our literacy lessons

  • Volunteer coaches help our students with reading, writing and spelling.
  • Coaches talk with the students by phone, Zoom or Google Meet for 30 minutes a day, for 2-4 days a week.
  • There is nowhere in NZ that is too far away for us to help you.
  • To become a student, you need to live in NZ.

How does it work?

1.

Student rings RYALT and we take your name and contact details. We then arrange for one of our team to contact you for an initial interview. This will help us to understand your needs and find the best coach for you. At this time, we will read out details of the student privacy agreement and confirm your acceptance during the call.

2.

Reading assessment and writing tasks are mailed to you, as well as a copy of the privacy agreement that was agreed to during your interview.

3.

Student completes writing assessments and mails the assessments back to RYALT.

4.

RYALT rings student to arrange a time to complete the reading assessment. Sometimes a better time is arranged for the student.

5.

Student is placed with a volunteer coach. The coach will ring the student to discuss the timing and frequency of each session. We encourage students to meet with their coach 2-5 times a week for 30 minutes.

6.

Coach sends reading material to student and the student sends completed writing tasks to the coach as required.

7.

If you have access to a computer and internet, you can practice by using our online literacy practice software to speed up your learning.

What happens during the half hour?

The student will talk with their coach about the writing the day it arrives; choose spelling words from the writing, discuss how they can be learned, add them to the spelling practice chart and start practising them.

They may revise or practise spelling words and read new material.

Homework is usually to learn spelling or vocab or to do some writing. Sometimes exercise sheets are given.
